Help bring back box gutters to historic Bingham-Waggoner Estate!

The roof at the historic Bingham-Waggoner Estate, 313 W. Pacific Ave., in Independence, MO, is scheduled to be replaced because of damage it sustained in a hail storm. For a short while, a window of opportunity exists to bring back the box gutters that were original to the house in the early 1900s.

Box gutters can be found on many old and historical buildings. They were the gutter of choice for years before pre-formed metal gutters became widely popular. Box gutters are invisible from the ground.

Time is short to raise the $80,000 needed to accomplish this task. Donations may be mailed to: Bingham-Waggoner Estate, PO Box 1163, Independence, MO, 64051. Donors are asked to specify how they wish their donation to be handled, should the fundraiser not reach its goal. The money can be placed in the endowment fund or returned to the donor.

The effect of flooding

Flooding along the Missouri River and highway improvements have put a little squeeze on Lexington, MO. High water on Historic Byway Hwy. 224 and a bridge replacement on Hwy. 24 has affected traffic routes in getting to the town, at least through mid-August. Highways 224 and 24 were used by folks from Independence, Kansas City and other coming from the west looking to shop in the town's antique and unique shops. Allan Houser bronze sculpture exhibit on display at Denver Botanic Gardens

Denver Botanic Gardens will take a year-long look at modern, contemporary and traditional American Indian arts. The centerpiece is the Gardens’ outdoor sculpture exhibit, Native Roots/Modern Form: Plants, Peoples and the Art of Allan Houser, on view at the Gardens now through November 13.

The show features more than 20 bronze works created by American modernist Allan Houser (Warm Springs Chiricahua Apache, 1914–1994). This pioneering 20th century personality opened doors for future generations of Native artists, and is one of the most important American artists of the 20th Century.

The Gardens also is offering many related exhibitions and programs for adults, families and youth, including guided tours, workshops and a monthly film series highlighting indigenous voices and issues.

Puppetry Arts Institute presents Harry Truman's boyhood story at presidential library

Children can learn about the Missouri farm boy who would grow up to become president of the United States in the puppet show, “Hats Off to Harry!” at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14, at the Truman Library, 500 W. US Hwy. 24, Independence, MO.

Sheriff's dept. issues 4-state wide alert for suspect in thefts at antique malls

The Clinton County (MO) Sheriff's Dept. is attempting to identify a suspect who allegedly stole thousands of dollars worth of jewelry at a Lathrop, MO, antique mall. The suspect is believed to also have hit other Missouri antique malls in Cass County and Grain Valley, and possibly Callaway County.

According to the department's release, on Friday, April 15, the suspect entered the Enchanted Frog Antique mall and removed one lock from the display case and jimmied the lock on a second case. The suspect made off with $4,500-worth of antique gold and silver jewelry. The suspect was driving a red Chevy Cavalier and was last seen heading east-bound on 116 Hwy. from the scene. License number is unknown.

The suspect appears to be a middle-aged, white man with a slightly receding hairline, dark hair with some gray, wearing glasses. He was wearing a long-sleeve dark blue shirt and a red short-sleeved overshirt, and jeans.

The Sheriff's dept. has issued a four-state wide alert for the suspect. Anyone with information, should contact Sgt. Speiser with the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department at 816-539-2156.

Gold & silver thefts at Missouri antique mall

Jewelry, estimated in the thousands, has been reported stolen from the Enchanted Frog Antiques mall, 7950 E. 116 Hwy, in Lathrop, MO.

Joyce Steinbuch, co-owner, estimates that about $4,500-worth of jewelry--mostly rings in sterling or 14k gold, some with good stones--was taken from a dealer's showcase on Friday, April 15.

"He must have had tools on him to get through our three-lock showcase system during open hours," Steinbuch said. "The tape shows that he's monkeying around the locks but you can't see exactly what he's using. You can see his hands full of the merchandise at one point though!"

The Enchanted Frog has a closed-circuit TV security system. Steinbuch filed a report with the Clinton County Sheriff's Office. An officer, she said, reviewed several hours of surveillance tapes at her store.

Surveillance tape shows the alleged thief appears to be a middle-aged white man, with brown hair and beard, both with some gray. He was wearing glasses and a long-sleeve blue T-shirt with a short-sleeve red shirt over it. Surveillance tape also shows, Steinbuch said, that the man was driving a red car.

My sister and I took a road trip last weekend to Vinita, OK, to visit the Vinita Antique Mall and Gene's Collectibles, both located off historic Route 66. Nice shops packed with a variety of antiques and collectibles. Vicky Smith, owner of the Vinita Antique Mall, said a small table she recently sold will appear in one of Rachel Ashwell's books. Ashwell coined the term "shabby chic."

Union Pacific will route one of its legendary steam locomotives from Kansas City, through St. Louis and on to Little Rock. The excursion date will be determined within the coming weeks.

"Voting in communities along the routes was vigorous, with the lead frequently changing hands by the minute. Voting in the final phase of the contest was conducted Jan. 4-17. Four finalist routes were determined by steam locomotive fans voting Nov. 9 through Dec. 6, 2010. The final four segments were:

The Tuscola Turn: Starting in Boone, Iowa, this segment travels east through Marshalltown, Cedar Rapids, Mt. Vernon, De Witt, and Clinton. It continues toward Chicago through the Illinois communities of Rochelle, DeKalb, West Chicago, Glen Ellyn and Proviso, turning south to Woodland and Villa Grove before concluding in Tuscola.

The Little Rock Express: Starting in Kansas City, Mo., this segment travels east to Boonville, Jefferson City, Chamois and St. Louis before heading south to Cape Girardeau, Dexter and Poplar Bluff. It continues through Bald Knob, Ark., before concluding in Little Rock.

The Baton Rouge Rambler: Starting in Dallas, this segment runs east through the Texas communities of Mesquite, Wills Point, Grand Saline, Mineola and Longview. It continues in Louisiana through Shreveport, Natchitoches and Alexandria before concluding in Baton Rouge.

The Boise Limited: Starting in Salt Lake City, this segment travels north in Utah to Ogden and Brigham City. It continues to Pocatello, Idaho, where it heads west to American Falls, Shoshone and Mountain Home before concluding in Boise.
In addition to route voting, five individuals who score the most contest "points" will win two tickets each for a special leg of the winning segment, as well as lodging and air fare. The person with the most points will be awarded the title of "Honorary Engineer" and given the opportunity to ride in the locomotive cab. Individual contest winners will be notified Jan. 19.

Missouri & Arkansas show caves to remain open

According to the Missouri Caves Association, Missouri and Arkansas' cave attractions will remain open despite the threat of White Nose Syndrome (WNS) affecting bats. The spread of WNS has been rapid and has been found in bats in Missouri. The disease contributes to a high mortality rate among bats at infected sites. Bats are beneficial to the ecology in their control of many insects. The animals also assist in the pollination of fruit crops. Humans are not affected by WNS.
As a precautionary measure, the Missouri Department of Conservation and the National Park Service have closed access to the "wild" caves within their control as human contact with bats and their environment can help spread the disease.

Dealers and organizers of the Music Valley and Tailgate Antique shows in Nashville are debunking the theory that younger people don't go antiquing after Country Music Award winner Taylor Swift and family spent time shopping at the two shows in October.
"In between looking and shopping for antiques, Taylor and her family stopped at many of the 300 booths to sign autographs and pose for pictures with the dealers," said Gail Taylor, publicist for the shows.

West Palm Beach show

Reports are good in terms of turnout and meeting dealer expectations at the Vintage Show & Sale in West Palm Beach, FL, held Nov. 21-22. Chicago jewelry dealer Brett Benson was quoted as calling the show "fantastic" and having met his personal sales goal within a few hours of the doors opening. In addition to clothing, artwork, furniture, jewelry and other items from the 1930s through the 1970s, show featured booksignings and a fashion show.
Next year's show is scheduled for Nov. 20-21 at the Palm Beach County Convention Center.

Ticketing an open house

Merchants in Greenwood, MO aren't happy that the local police issued parking tickets during the town's Christmas Open House last weekend. For some merchants, the outrage was compounded considering a parking ticket cost a supposed violator $60. One merchant, who owns two shops in town, has yet to hear from the mayor after being asked why the police were so heavy-handed.
The antique shops on Main Street Greenwood are a big part of the small town's identity besides an obvious revenue source. I guess the lesson here is: Watch where you park in Greenwood!

Credit card companies are reporting an uptick in retail sales using credit cards even as some analysts and economists are forecasting holiday sales as the same as last year or slightly worse (New York Times, Nov. 4, 2009) Still, for October, apparels sales were up 3.4 percent compared to a year ago, luxury goods rose 6.5 percent, jewelry 7.2 percent, with an increase in e-commerce to 18.7 percent. Reuters reports that economic forecaster Forrester Research predicts online sales to increase 8 percent this holiday season.

One thing we've noticed among some regional antique dealers is that less of them seem to have ignored the Christmas season as has been the trade's bane in the past. Some shops are even instituting Holiday layaway plans! Is the antique trade in the Midwest finally getting a clue?

Louisville show

We're going to experiment a little for January and February 2010. We're combining those months into one Discover Mid-America issue, which we'll start distributing right after the New Year's. Admittedly, it's a self-interest move considering those months are usually are slowest of the year. Also, we're looking at discounting some advertising rates for that combined issue. Deadline for ad and editorial copy is Dec. 15 instead of Dec. 10. We plan on restocking the issue at selected distribution locations and upon request.

An Ad-ology Research study, "Advertising's Impact in a Soft Economy," finds that more than 48% of U.S. adults believe that a lack of advertising by a retail store, bank or auto dealership during a recession indicates the business must be struggling.

Our experience with our advertising base shows that usually is not the case. It just means the antique shop owner has decided to save a little money by not advertising and will generally start advertising again once the economy appears to be improving.

Still, the results of this study should give shop owners reason to pause and wonder if negative public perception is worth saving a few dollars.

Shawn Hastings of Shawn Hastings Productions, who took over from Willowrush Productions, based in Indiana, the respected Overland Park Antique Show, has been scrambling to get the word out. The spring show will be March 20-22 at the Overland Park International Trade Center, 6800 W 115th St.. Admission is $6 for all three days.

This is one of the best shows held in the Kansas City area with scores of quality dealers from the Midwest.

Spreading broadband via the 'Stimulus"

According to Megan Tady from the web site Free Press, in her report "Five Days on the Digital Dirt Road," more than 14.3 million rural homes across the country – 61 percent – are not connected to high speed Internet." As she notes, in practical terms that means millions of people can't apply for a job online, take a class, start home-based businesses, get news and information and, I may add, prevent antique shops from selling online through their web sites that are uniquely created for their business. In short, lack of broadband inhibits the growth of the antique trade.

The ‘Stimulus’ effect on antiquing

As a group, antique shop owners and dealers, aren’t a very high-tech group. (Considering the use of the words “antique” and “high-tech” in the same sentence, I know there’s a joke in there somewhere.) Sure, thousands of shops nationwide have tied their ecommerce functions to operations like Ruby Lane, TIAS.com, eBay or WorthPoint, and some are going it alone in selling antiques and collectibles online through their website.

But my experience as publisher of DMA has revealed that many shop owners in the Midwest — especially in small towns — consider a fax machine and dial-up email the peak of their high-tech experience. Though some might blame age or a generation gap as the factor in this avoidance of the high-tech world — as if everyone who likes antiques uses the word to describe their longevity on the this planet — the fact is the Internet is slow in coming to small town American because not many telecom companies thought there was money to be made in bringing broadband to the hinterland.

That fact is born out by the United States being 17th worldwide in broadband penetration compared to other developed countries. Yet, of the active U.S. Internet users, 89% use broadband. The qualifier should be “where available.”

Regardless of how you feel politically about the $787 billion American Reinvestment and Recovery Act signed by President Obama, it’s going to expand broadband availability and through that get more antique shops online and in ecommerce.

Some $7.2 billion of the legislation is set aside for broadband access and adoption, and directs the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to come up with a national plan.

A good chunk of that money ($4.35 billion) will be distributed through a temporary grant program distributed by The National Telecommunications and Information Administration. The requirement is that such broadband projects must be completed within two years of the awarding the grant and must adhere to Internet nondiscrimination and openness principles established by the FCC.

All this is good news to those shop owners who want to have a website that doesn’t take 15 minutes to upload, and, at least, begin to consider selling online.

I don’t think the brick and mortar aspect of selling antiques will go away. Though I do think small shops will have increased difficulty staying afloat without going online and taking on the basic aspects of Internet marketing.

The personal dynamic wrapped into the conversation about bidding on or buying an antique will always be an essential and attractive factor in the business. And it’s something that can’t quite be duplicated through shopping on the Internet though blogging can help alleviate the dryness in the exchange.

And where does that leave print as an advertising vehicle? Daily newspapers aside, publications that focus on a particular subject will survive. But as a reminder, Discovery Publications builds small business websites and we know a little about ecommerce.

Book on Missouri lures

Dean Murphy, who is mentioned in the cover feature, "Love of old lures" in the February 2009 issue of Discover Mid-America, sent us a copy of his book Fishing Tackle MADE IN MISSOURI History and Identification.

At first glace, Murphy's book in interesting, well organized and a sure attraction to collectors of fishing lures and those interested in the history of fishing.

In a note Murphy included with the book, he mentioned he was looking for a place to house his collection for public viewing, hopefully something along the lines of The Karl and Beverly White collection at the Oklahoma Aquarium in Jenks, OK – part of the Feb. '08 cover feature.

"I would like to fnd somewhere in Missouri to get it displayed after I pass on. I am 86," said Murphy.
